Presentation at the Ashland Railroad Museum

"My Grandfather Fred Derocher: From Orphan Train Rider to Railroad Telegrapher"

Laura debuts a presentation about the historic Orphan Trains that ran from the 1850s through 1930s, bringing orphans from New York and Boston to the Midwest. Learn how the Orphan Trains were started and why, how the children fared. Laura will focus on her Grandfather's story, as he was one of 200,000 orphans sent from NY to be with a new family. His story is inspiring, illustrating triumph of the human spirit despite adversity. This presentation may feature songs from the musical "Orphan Train."
