I fell in love with someone who wasn't available.
We spent some time together and then he was gone. It hurt to lose him,
but he'd opened me to feelings and aspects of myself I hadn't known. I
wrote this song in the style of an old, 1940's standard. The sad, codependent
last line is in keeping with this old song style; I don't really believe it. ;-)
When You Passed Through
Words and Music by Laura Derocher
I was doing my best, safe in my nest,
resting in everydays.
I stayed on the ground. Never strayed, so I'd found
nowhere else to be.
But when you sailed through my meadow
on your way to what you had to do,
I dared to see there was more to me
when you passed through.
You coaxed me to sing, unfroze my wings
and stoked my life with meaning.
Though you couldn't be mine, I thought I'd be fine
with whatever time we shared.
But when you led me to
that siren sky of "I need you,"
I dared not feel how lonely I'd fly
when you passed through.
You tapped my passion,
unwrapped my song.
Now your lark lies quietly dying
without you gliding along.
I'm not doing my best, back in my nest,
pressed into everydays.
My face to the ground, I can't bear to turn around
to no sound or sight of you.
I'm confused: Is it better never knowing,
or glowing while you knew?
I dared to know though I knew I'd lose
when you passed through.
I'm confused: Is it better never knowing,
or glowing while you knew?
I flew my first true flight and maybe my last
when you passed through.
