One step I needed to take along my path was letting go of
my need to please my father. I had gone into business because that's what I
thought I was supposed to do. Now it was time to honor who I was (an artist)
and to do life my way.
My dad left his father's path too, trading in small-town
security and a steady job working for the railroad. The baby of eight children,
my father was the only one to graduate from college. This song honors our journeys,
as well as everyone who has stepped out to write and sing their own song.
Song of My Own
Words and Music by Laura Derocher
Daddy, oh I love you.
Daddy, so I tried to
echo the song you
composed as your own.
Always aimed to please you.
But in that game I failed to
find who the girl was
and where she felt at home.
CHORUS:
Remember the faith it took to leave your father's path
As he asked you, "Please turn back.
Play it safe, son. Play along."
"No, Pa, I gotta write my own song."
Daddy, hear me singing.
To the world, I'm bringing
the real me, through with clinging
to melodies of old.
Always aimed to please you.
But in that game I failed to
find who this voice was
and where it felt at home.
CHORUS (variation):
I'll remember the faith it took to leave my father's path
as he asked me, "Please turn back.
Play it safe, hon. Play along."
"No, Dad, I have to write my own song."
Daddy hear me singing!
To the world, I'm bringing
the real me, through with clinging
and hiding inside me,
who bravely has chosen
to step out and compose
this new song of my own.
